The SA U19 Academy's Dream Turned Sour in France
The SA U19 Academy's dream tour of France took an unexpected turn on Saturday afternoon in Châteauroux. Despite their best efforts, the Junior Boks' 'Class of 2026' fell short, losing to the French U19s by a score of 20-12 (halftime: 7-7). The slippery conditions and a series of unforced errors proved to be their downfall.
The match was a challenging one for the young South African players, who had limited time together due to a recent break after provincial age-group competitions. The early rain made the playing surface and ball slippery, causing the South Africans more than a few problems. However, they also failed to capitalize on their opportunities, with a series of handling errors due to the greasy ball.
Both teams struggled with set pieces, and the South Africans found themselves conceding silly penalties during their attacks in the French 22. The French team capitalized on these mistakes, scoring the first try through Siphosethu Mnebelele in the 15th minute, followed by Vusi Moyo's conversion, giving the visitors a 7-0 lead.
The French team equalized five minutes later with a maul try by Edouard Jabea Njocke, converted by Luka Keletaona. The hosts were penalized for double-banking late in the half, but the SA U19s couldn't capitalize on this advantage.
The second half saw France take the lead with a penalty goal by Keletaona, five minutes into the restart. They kept the pressure on, eventually breaking through with a numerical advantage after Lindsey Jansen was sin-binned for illegal play. Quentin Valentino crashed over for France's second try, with Keletaona converting to give the hosts a 10-point lead.
South Africa fought back, but their error count increased. When France was shown a yellow card for a maul infringement, Kebotile Maake scored for the visitors. However, the game remained close with a five-point difference with 10 minutes to go. Unfortunately, a few minutes later, Keletaona sealed the victory for France with his second penalty goal after another breakdown infringement by the SA U19s.
