Edit captions

You can change the text and timestamps of your captions. You can also use caption editing software or services.

Edit caption text

Note: If you’re editing captions created automatically, a new caption track that includes your revisions will be generated.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left menu, select Subtitles Edit or remove captions - YouTube Help (1).
  3. Click the video you’d like to edit.
  4. For the language you’d like to edit, in the “Subtitles” column select Edit.
  5. For automatic captions, select Duplicate and edit Edit or remove captions - YouTube Help (2) Continue to overwrite your existing draft.
  6. Click inside any line in the caption track panel and edit the text.
  7. When you’ve finished making changes, click Publish.

Edit caption timing

You can edit the timing on your caption tracks directly in the YouTube captions editor or by downloading your caption files.

Use the YouTube captions editor

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left menu, select Subtitles Edit or remove captions - YouTube Help (3).
  3. Click the video you’d like to edit.
  4. For the language you’d like to edit, in the “Subtitles” column, select Edit Edit or remove captions - YouTube Help (4).
  5. Select a specific line in the caption track panel:
    • You can adjust timing by editing the two timestamp boxes beside the caption track.

    Note: If you’re not seeing timestamps, select Edit timings.

  6. When you’ve finished making changes, click Publish.

Download & edit caption files

You can edit timestamps by downloading the caption file and using a plain text (.txt) editing program like TextEdit or Notepad to make edits.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left menu, select Subtitles Edit or remove captions - YouTube Help (5).
  3. Click the video you’d like to edit.
  4. Under Subtitles, click Editnext to the language you want to edit.
  5. Click Options Edit or remove captions - YouTube Help (6) and select Download subtitles. Learn more about caption file formats.
  6. Your browser will download a file containing the captions track. Edit the file and save it.
  7. Follow the instructions to upload the captions to your video again.

Remove captions

To stop captions from showing on your video, you can delete them completely from your video and Google Account.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left menu, select Subtitles Edit or remove captions - YouTube Help (7).
  3. For the language you’d like to delete, in the “Subtitles” column, select Options Edit or remove captions - YouTube Help (8) Edit or remove captions - YouTube Help (9) Delete Edit or remove captions - YouTube Help (10).
  4. You’ll be asked to confirm that you want to delete the captions. Click Delete captions.

Note: Once the automatic captions are deleted for a video, you can't turn them back on. Even when you remove captions, they may still be used to give relevant video answers to your viewers. Viewers might see video answers when they’ve searched for the answer to a specific question. Answers are pulled from your captions or auto-generated transcript so viewers can quickly decide if your video is the right fit for them.
